Our Work

Our domestic work focuses primarily on coordinating workshops, while our international work focuses on small grant-making.

SMALL GRANT FOR TIBETANS IN TIBET
We disburse small grants to support existing women-led initiatives and projects that empower women, particularly in Tibet under our three themes of Girls’ Education, Women’s Health, and Women’s Leadership. The support always goes to grassroots initiatives by Tibetan women for seniors without family, single mothers, widows, victims of DV/GBV and girl orphans, etc. particularly in very marginalized settlements and conditions.

EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS
We organize educational and informational workshops on women’s issues such as domestic violence, breast cancer and breaking stereotypical roles for women.

CONNECTING IMMIGRANTS WITH LOCAL RESOURCES
We bridge the divide between new immigrants/refugee women and existing resources in the Bay Area. We do this by introducing women to vocational training programs in traditionally male-dominated jobs such as plumping, taxi services, electrician, while supporting conventional skills such as tailoring, cooking, elderly care, etc. Organize skills-building workshops that prepare women for job applications and interviews.  and by helping new immigrants and refugees women become familiar with existing benefit services in health, housing, immigration, and social services. We also assist and link women victims of domestic violence to existing shelters and counseling services and, where necessary, provide language interpreters from respective communities.

STANDING AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
With partners, ACHA supports DV survivors from the Himalayan communities by being a caring sister and a patient listener, offering emotional and resource support in the form of referrals to appropriate organizations including shelters/transitional housing, and raising emergency funds to help survivors transition into an independent life with/without their children.
